Battle Pass Guide — Free vs Premium Tracks and When to Buy

Economy · 2026-05-03

What Is the Battle Pass?

The Battle Pass is a season-long progression track. Every season offers a Battle Pass with two paid tiers — Advanced (500 Gold Bricks) and Premium (2,000 Gold Bricks) — alongside the Free track. You earn rewards by completing daily and seasonal tasks that fill a token meter. The Pass lasts the entire season (49-90 days), and rewards range from gems and speedups to season-specific currency (e.g. Rainforest Mushrooms in Season 6).

The Battle Pass Decision Framework

Free track is always worth running. Premium is consistently the best per-Gold-Brick season pass. 2,000 Gold Bricks for a full season of compounding rewards is solid A-tier value in every season. The Free track on its own delivers significant cumulative gems and speedups — engage with it regardless of whether you buy Premium.

Note (May 2026): Earlier versions of this guide framed the Season 6 Battle Pass as "S-tier" because it bundled 70 named Awakening Shards. The Awakening Battle Pass was removed in the 2026 monetisation update. Awakening Shards are now obtained exclusively through the Hero Awakening Trial and Global Expedition (both free). The Seasonal Battle Pass no longer contains Awakening Shards. See the Season Passes Guide for the full updated catalogue and the Hero Awakening Guide for current shard sources.

Free vs Premium Track Structure

Both tracks share the same task list. Completing tasks awards Battle Pass tokens. Tokens fill a tier meter, and each tier you reach unlocks rewards on whichever tracks you have.

TrackWhat You Get
Free TrackModest rewards at every tier — gems, speedups, basic resources, some hero shards
Premium Track (paid)Substantially better rewards at every tier — more gems, more speedups, hero shards, gear, and season-specific items like Awakening Shards

You don't need to choose between them. Premium track simply adds rewards on top of the Free track for tiers you reach. Buying Premium late in the season retroactively unlocks the rewards from tiers you already passed.

Token Earning

Tokens come from a daily task list and seasonal milestones. Typical sources:

SourceNotes
Daily loginFree baseline tokens for showing up
Daily questsTrain troops, gather resources, complete builds, etc. Most are routine play
Weekly questsLarger token rewards for bigger milestones
Event participationMarshal's Guard, Sky Predator, VS, SvS — tokens at thresholds
Season milestonesHQ pushes, hero star upgrades, gear progression
Premium token boostSome Premium passes accelerate token earning by 20-50%

A reasonably active player can complete the full Battle Pass tier track within a season without rushing. F2P players who play daily typically reach 80-100% of tiers; players who skip days fall short.

Awakening Battle Pass (Removed)

Removed in the 2026 monetisation update. Earlier in Season 6 there were three sequential Awakening Battle Passes (Kimberly Weeks 1-3, DVA Weeks 3-5, Tesla Weeks 6-8) that each rewarded ~70 named Awakening Shards on the Premium tier. These passes have been removed entirely. Awakening Shards are now F2P-only:

  1. Hero Awakening Trial — up to 10 shards per hero
  2. Global Expedition (Weeks 2, 4, 6 of an Awakening season) — primary shard source

See the Hero Awakening Guide for the current shard farming routine.

The Seasonal Battle Pass during Awakening seasons still runs — it just no longer includes named Awakening Shards. Its value reverts to the standard "solid A-tier per-Gold-Brick" framing.

Pre-Season 6 Battle Passes

In Pre-Season 1 through Season 5, the Battle Pass focused on Exclusive Weapon shards and seasonal currency.

Pre-Awakening BP Value Drivers

Reward TypeWhy It Matters
EW ShardsFor the hero whose EW launches that season. Massive value when matched to your squad
Seasonal CurrencyCrystalGold (S5), Spice (S3), Copper (S4), etc. Direct rank progression
Gear MaterialsStar promotion materials and Mythic Blueprints in late seasons
Skill MedalsBulk Skill Medals across the entire pass
Speedups + GemsSteady supply across all tiers

A good rule: Premium Battle Pass is worth it whenever the season's featured progression matches your squad investment.

When to Buy Premium

Decision framework based on the season:

SituationBuy Premium?
Season 6+ Awakening hero matches your primary squadYes — S-tier value
Season's featured EW hero matches your squadYes — strong A-tier value
Active F2P, no specific carry investmentSkip — gem savings better invested in VIP packs
Whale-tier spender pursuing top server rankYes for every BP — marginal returns add up
Account barely active, missing daily questsSkip — you won't reach enough tiers to justify Premium cost

Activity Threshold

Premium is only worth it if you can reach the majority of tiers. A rough heuristic:

  • Daily login + daily quests: ~70-80% of tiers reachable. Premium pays off
  • Weekly login only: ~30-40% of tiers. Premium probably not worth it
  • Heavy daily play + event participation: 100% of tiers reachable. Premium delivers full value

Buying Premium Late in the Season

You can buy Premium Battle Pass at any point during the season and retroactively unlock all rewards from tiers you already cleared. This means:

  • Mid-season Premium purchases are valid — no point penalty for buying late
  • Wait if uncertain — buy at week 4-5 once you know whether you'll engage enough
  • End-of-season buying is rare but works — you immediately collect the full backfill

The trade-off: buying late means you don't benefit from the token earning boost for the early weeks.

Common Battle Pass Mistakes

  1. Skipping daily quests — token earning depends on daily activity. Skipped days = skipped tiers
  2. Buying Premium for a hero you don't use — Awakening Shards are hero-specific, no value if you don't Awaken
  3. Buying all three S6 Awakening BPs as F2P — overspend; one matched to your squad is enough
  4. Not buying Premium during a perfect-fit Awakening week — leaves the highest-value pack on the table
  5. Buying Premium too late to reach high tiers — buying in week 7 of an 8-week season caps your tier reach
  6. Forgetting that Premium retroactively unlocks — if you've already cleared tier 30, Premium will deliver tier 1-30 rewards instantly
  7. Comparing Premium price to gem packs — Battle Pass is closer to a subscription than a pack. Different value math
  8. Letting tokens cap — claim rewards as you earn them; some seasons have token caps
  9. Skipping the Free track because you didn't buy Premium — Free is always worth running
  10. Not coordinating with seasonal Hot Deal cycles — sometimes BP is bundled with other items at a discount
